How to check a second-hand phone before buying
EzMobile editorial team · Updated
Before buying a second-hand phone, verify the seller, device identity, account removal and physical condition. Test calls, charging, cameras and connectivity, and get proof of sale with clear return terms. A bargain is not worthwhile if the phone is stolen, account-locked or unsupported. Do not share your banking credentials during testing.
Verify identity and ownership
Check the model and IMEI against the device and paperwork. Ask for proof of ownership and a receipt that identifies the seller and device.
An IMEI check alone cannot guarantee lawful ownership or prevent future blocking. Avoid deals where the seller refuses reasonable checks.
Test before paying
Test the screen, buttons, microphone, speaker, charging, Wi-Fi and a call. Inspect for damage and ask about repairs or replacement parts.
Confirm that previous accounts and activation locks are removed using the manufacturer’s legitimate process. Never buy a phone on a promise to bypass a lock later.
Read the offer
Ask whether it is used or professionally refurbished, and exactly what warranty and returns apply. Check operating-system support and battery condition.
Use a safe transaction method and location. Do not send a deposit to an unknown seller because of pressure to act immediately.
