Lost or stolen rental phone in South Africa: what to do

EzMobile editorial team · Updated

If your phone is lost or stolen, secure your accounts, contact your mobile network and notify the device provider or insurer promptly. Use the manufacturer’s official lost-device tools where available. Report theft to the police and keep the reference. Do not assume rental payments stop or that insurance is included.

Secure access first

Use a trusted device to protect important accounts and contact your bank if banking access may be compromised. Ask your network to suspend the SIM and explain its blocking process.

Do not confront a suspected thief based on a location pin. Share relevant information with the police instead.

Record and report

Keep the IMEI, proof of purchase or rental, and a police case reference for theft. Ask the network what it requires to blacklist the device.

Lost-device tools have limitations depending on the phone’s settings and connectivity; remote erasure may affect further tracking.

Check your agreement

Notify the provider and insurer within their stated time limits. Confirm excesses, exclusions and what evidence they need.

EzMobile’s demo does not include a confirmed insurance, replacement or loss policy. Do not cancel payments on the assumption that theft ends the agreement.
