How to dispute an error on your South African credit report

If your credit report contains incorrect information, lodge a dispute with the credit bureau that supplied the report. Identify the entry, explain the error and attach supporting evidence through the bureau’s official channel. Keep your reference number and correspondence. Escalate unresolved complaints using the National Credit Regulator’s published process.
Build a clear evidence pack
Highlight the disputed account and write down exactly what is wrong: an incorrect balance, a payment not recorded or an account you never opened.
Include relevant receipts or statements, sharing only the information required through a secure official channel. Never pay a stranger to delete accurate information.
Submit and follow up
Use the dispute channel named by your bureau and retain its acknowledgement. Ask for the investigation outcome in writing.
If the error concerns a provider, notify that provider too. Check a fresh report once the correction has been confirmed.
Keep applying on hold
Repeated applications will not resolve a reporting error. First understand whether a decline relates to affordability, identity verification or the credit entry.
If the process remains unresolved, consult the NCR’s complaints guidance. Do not assume that correcting one entry automatically means a provider must approve you.
