Am I blacklisted? How to check for free in South Africa

There is no official "blacklist" in South Africa. Credit bureaus record your payment history, and a poor record is what people call being blacklisted. You can check your credit report for free once a year from each bureau, such as TransUnion, Experian, XDS and Compuscan.

What "blacklisted" really means

Lenders look at your credit report from a credit bureau. Missed payments, judgments or accounts handed over to collectors can lower your score, so a lender declines you. That is what most people mean by being blacklisted.

How to check your credit report for free

By law you are entitled to one free credit report per year from each registered credit bureau. Request it on the bureau's website with your ID number. Check for mistakes and dispute anything that is wrong; the bureau must investigate.

Can I still get a phone?

Yes, often. Rent to own providers like EzMobile look at affordability: your income and monthly expenses, not just your score. Approval is never guaranteed, but many people declined for a contract are approved for a rental.

Common questions

Is there a blacklist in South Africa?+

No official list exists. Credit bureaus keep records of your payment behaviour, and lenders use those records to decide.

How long does a bad listing stay on my record?+

It depends on the type of listing. Many adverse listings fall away after one to two years, while judgments can last longer unless rescinded.

Does checking my credit report lower my score?+

No. Checking your own report does not affect your score.

General information only, not financial advice. Approval is subject to affordability checks.
