Free credit report in South Africa: where to start

You are entitled to a free credit report from each registered credit bureau once every 12 months. Use the bureau’s official website, verify your identity and check every account. Your own report helps you spot mistakes before applying for a phone; it does not guarantee that an application will be approved.
Request it safely
Start with the National Credit Regulator’s register of credit bureaus, rather than an advert offering to “clear” your record. Follow the chosen bureau’s identity checks. Avoid sending your ID or bank statements through an unsolicited message.
A report from one bureau may not contain exactly the same information as another. Keep a copy and note when you requested it.
Read more than the score
Check your name and identity details, open accounts, balances and payment history. A score summarises information; it does not replace checking the underlying entries.
If you see an account you do not recognise, contact the bureau and the named provider. Use their official dispute or fraud process before making further applications.
Decide on the next step
A correct negative entry is different from an error. Budget for existing commitments before considering another monthly payment.
If you cannot meet current repayments, speak to a registered debt counsellor. A phone application is not a solution to an unaffordable debt load.
