Getting a phone under debt review: a safe checklist
EzMobile editorial team · Updated
South Africa’s National Credit Act restricts new credit while a consumer is under debt review. Do not assume that an agreement avoids this rule because it is called a rental. Ask your registered debt counsellor to review the actual terms, and consider an affordable phone paid for outright without disrupting your repayment plan.
Start with your counsellor
Explain why you need the phone, your proposed budget and whether it is essential for work. Share the written offer rather than a marketing screenshot.
Ask whether the agreement creates new credit or other obligations and whether the payment fits your plan. EzMobile cannot give you legal clearance.
Avoid workarounds
Do not use another person’s ID or hide an agreement. “Guaranteed approval under debt review” is not a substitute for lawful and affordable terms.
Check that anyone offering debt counselling appears on the NCR register. Be cautious of fees for removing debt review without an appropriate legal basis.
Consider an outright purchase
A basic prepaid or properly checked second-hand phone may meet your needs without another monthly device payment.
Keep money available for essential expenses and existing obligations. If the proposed phone would cause missed payments, reduce the budget or wait.
